Award-winning Michaela Burger moonwalks down memory lane to reveal the true story about how she met Michael Jackson in her high-energy new show, The Day I Met MJ - 90’s Hits! Burger and her band will be performing nine shows only during Mad March at Gluttony.

In 1996 a 15-year old Burger won an SAFM competition in Adelaide to meet her idol, Michael Jackson. The lead up, the moment and the aftermath of this anecdote are gleefully and playfully told through 90s pop music renditions with Burger’s powerhouse vocals and her snazzy live band.

“It’s like I’ve found a memory box of my dinky diary, handwritten song lyrics and old scratched CDs - we’re going to ‘Remember the Time’ we sang into our hairbrushes and made up dances to perform in the living room”, Burger says.

Audiences are in for an entertaining nostalgic treat with music direction led by Shanon D Whitelock (Reuben Kaye, The Kaye Hole) on keys and Kyrie Anderson (Lost and Found Orchestra, Banff International Jazz Festival) on drums and percussion.

Burger brings an hour packed full of 90s bangers to relive highlights from her teenage years for one week only at Gluttony, one of Adelaide Fringe’s major venue hubs. All music will be performed live, and of course - there will be a sing-a-long (or three!).

Held in a gorgeous, accessible and airconditioned cabaret music venue; the BankSA Theatre is complete with a giant chandelier and red stage curtains. The 135-seat theatre even has an in-room vintage bar so audiences will be able to keep the drinks flowing during the performance if they desire.

Michaela Burger is well-known for her performances in ROUGE, A Migrant’s Son, Exposing Edith, Simply Brill, Twelfth Night (Botanic Gardens/Carrick Hill), Candide (State Opera/State Theatre SA), Rumpelstiltskin (Windmill Theatre/State Theatre SA), Cranky Bear (Patch Theatre) and has appeared in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival many times over the past years. Burger was the recipient of the 2019 Frank Ford Award, 2016 Best Cabaret Fringe, and has been nominated for two Helpmann Academy Awards.

Music direction is by award-winning composer and music director, Shanon D Whitelock (Reuben Kaye, Hairspray, Carole King: The Songbook of her Life). Percussion and drums by Kyrie Anderson who has performed with Emma Donovan, Julia Jacklin, and regularly collaborates with South Australian artists Nancy Bates and Libby O’Donovan.

Michaela Burger says,

“The 90s are arguably the best decade of music and I love a good singalong! I can’t wait to get the whole room singing at the top of their lungs to ‘Torn’ by Natalia Imbruglia; it will be a fun show and I just want every audience member to have a blast.”

The Day I Met MJ - 90s Hits! is a show for die-hard 90s lovers and music fans, as well as those who reluctantly know every word to Celine Dion’s “I’m Alive” album because their parents had the CD on repeat for road trips when they were kids.

Burger and her band are doing nine performances in March at Gluttony. Sessions will be held at 7:30pm every evening from Tuesday to Sunday, plus an extra 5pm show on Friday afternoon. On weekends, matinee performances are at 11:30am both days (boozy brunch anyone?) and all shows are PG so you’re welcome to bring young people.

The Day I Met MJ - 90s Hits! is a celebration of the decade that defined a generation. Bring your friends, bring your mums, and your friends who are mums, grab a bottle of chardy and settle in for a spectacular day or night out at Gluttony this Fringe.
